I've watched some fairly scary movies this year; the R-rated Evil Dead Rise, Talk to Me, Fear Street.. but this one got my heart pumping the most. It definitely at the top of this years list for an overabundance of jump scares, done so by expertly creating a spooky atmosphere and building visual tension, all keeping the chills coming. I really don't think a PG-13 rating held this back at all.

There are some things holding it back from "great" though and, in the end, it's rather forgettable. I have not read Stephen King's source, but I imagine there's a lot more depth to The Boogeyman than the film explores. It briefly mentions it as a monster as old as time, but doesn't actually supply that much weight to that.

There's also a bit of a recent trope in horror now with a monster preying on grieving family. This film seems to rely heavily on that as a point of attack, but doesn't dive into it enough to be symbolic. If your looking for something deeper on grief symbolism, stick with The Babadook.

Ultimately, a fun edge-of-your seat jump fest that's not likely to linger with you past the credits.

Thanks for stoping by! ;)
