An enjoyable movie if you want to suspend belief and just go with the flow. There were many odd choices in the story to overcome, though, and that holds it back. [SPOILERS BELOW] First, I liked how the movie started by keeping the audience in the dark. Going in blind, it was interesting that the movie seemed like a cat-and-mouse thriller. I did know it was horror, so I knew something was going to turn eventually and when it did, I was caught completely off guard. However, waiting 40 minutes was far too long, especially for just an 85 minute runtime. The story is quite obviously a metaphor for starting a new life after ALS; but it also felt a little forced in. Also, decisions like having such a muted response to such a global zombie epidemic threat seems weird. Also, I'm not convinced it needed to be zombies at all; could have just been an infectious disease movie, really. Finally, they made such a huge deal about her getting to the border but.. so what? It's not like if she got there a privately contracted security firm couldn't follow her; and it's not like the second she touched Canadian soil the virus would automatically spread. All in all, a fine chase movie, a small number of scares and some gore. Not bad, but could probably find something scarier or more thrilling. |
