A different take on the possession genre, with no head rotating or pea-soup vomiting. It was a slow-paced story without too many surprises, but enough ambiguity to keep me uncertain of details and interested how it would end. There wasn't enough to consider it an outright psychological thriller, which is a bit disappointing for me, but may not have been what it was going for. Sean Patrick Flanery was intense and nailed his portrayal of his characters; the rest of the cast was decent enough. The mostly single-setting made it feel a bit like a stage play. There was some slight religious undertones that could be seen as some sort of propaganda by some... but it's a possession movie rooted in the balance of heaven and hell, so, I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised with religious undertones. Overall, it was a decent watch, even if I wish it took some extra steps to build psychological confusion. |
