It Lives Inside2023 • PG-13 • 1h 39m![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An Indian-American teenager struggling with her cultural identity has a falling out with her former best friend and, in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness. |
I watched this right after The Boogeyman; which is probably a bit unfortunate as there were some fairly significant parallels; though perhaps nothing more than common tropes (which does go to say something about the originality). The movie follows Samidha (Megan Suri), an Indian-American teen that is struggling with her cultural identity. She's grown distant from a childhood friend who has grown into a high school outcast and carries around an empty jar which breaks during a confrontation unleashing an ancient Indian demonic force. Being touted as "from the producers of Get Out" and with an Indian-centric cast, I was expecting a fair amount of cultural commentary. But, where Get Out used racial tension at the core of its horror, It Lives Inside felt more like a shallow monster movie with an Indian cast. For instance, I would have enjoyed it more if there were more parallels to the monster and the young characters' cultural identity. Or, say, if "it" that lives inside us was a reflection of our own self. There was just felt like there could have been more that could have been done there. In the end it was a fine movie with some fair number of scares; but fell short of being a favorite. |
