What a departure from the first one. Hard to say it's even a real sequel; feels more like Raimi wanted to shift to a whacky comedy for this and the next movie (Army of Darkness) so he re-did the first Evil Dead as a comedy, and called it Evil Dead II; Ash doesn't seem to recall the Necromicon at all, nor any of the very similar events from the first Evil Dead. There's a lot less blood, and a lot less fright. It felt like the weird Japanese horror comedy "House" for some of it. Overall, it was was entertaining and made me chuckle a few times, but there wasn't as much fright as the first, and I was far from on-the-edge-of-my-seat. I did dive a bit into this one, and found a video where Bruce Campbell explains that the first part of Evil Dead II tries to re-tell the first Evil Dead because they didn't have the rights to cover what had happened thus far; so it is a bit of a re-boot then, with an extension. |
