I've got to be honest, it wasn't too long ago since I watched the first Evil Dead and it frightened me pretty good. So, I wasn't really super excited to jump into this remale, what with 40 years of update visuals (also, the first Evil Dead is now 42 years old? wtf). Well, I'm glad I did. Demonic possession still gets to me for some reason, but this one was enjoyable. I do remember liking the original a bit more, but I thought this update was very well executed, with a couple fresh ideas, while still paying homage to the original. I'm kinda glad they remade it with the frightening tone of the original, and less of the whackiness from Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness (I know those are cult classics with a following, and they're find, but watching for the first time recently, I wished they were as frightening as I found the first. Anyway, I digress). Jane Levy pulled off the hero character well, finding her own space without trying to become Ash, and the storyline of addiction was a nice update to get group of friends up to the cabin. All in all, a nice reboot that I hope continues on to greater things. I'm excited to see Evil Dead Rises next. |
