Army of Darkness1992 • R • 1h 21m![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When Ash Williams is accidentally transported to 1300 A.D., he must retrieve the Necronomicon and battle an army of the dead in order to return home. |
The movie was fine and entertaining but it felt like such a sharp departure from the first two Evil Dead movies, which was kind of a distraction (especially since I was purposefully watching them back-to-back). It wasn't frightening, nor overwhelmingly funny. Evil Dead was quite chilling, and Evil Dead II was quite funny. This one felt like it kind of straddled both genres staying quite shallow. At times it felt like it wanted to be quippy in its approach of the setting, following something like Monty Python or Princess Bride, but never quite got that kind of laugh. And it never got close to the scares of the first couple; I assume to have it be more approachable for wider audiences. I'm not sure why Raimi somewhat abandoned the entire premise of the first two movies with soul sucking, body-jumping, demonic possessions. I also found it a little strange that the end of Evil Dead II has Ash landing in the medieval times and hailed as a hero after shooting down a flying demon. But then Army of Darkness abandons that right away, having him captured as a prisoner by the same set of knights. The practical effects were very fun to watch; I love this era for that. |
